The drive out to the spaceport, the walk up the ramp, the first sight of the Pathfinder at full scale — a city of strangers about to become home. Olivia records every minute of it for her channel, narrating the adventure, until the ship starts to feel less like a thrill and more like a place where she'll have to find her footing.
In the cadet mess, the seat she's been given turns out to have belonged to someone else — and the ship's doctor makes sure she knows it. The performance slips. And somewhere far ahead in time, her older self is still trying to get off this same ship alive.
